In September 2015 Silo Theatre, one of Auckland’s leading theatre companies, staged English playwright David Greig’s acclaimed play The Events. Exploring the fallout from one horrific act, The Events ultimately draws into focus the responsibility and power of community in the face of unspeakable tragedy.

Each night of the season a different community choir from the Auckland region performed, providing an evocative musical score spanning traditional choral hymns to Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar. The choirs discover The Events at the same time as the audience, having never read the script and with a very limited knowledge of the plot.

LIONS follows The Counties Manukau District Commander’s Police Choir as they learn the music and then perform in the final show of The Events. Their role as police officers gives them a unique perspective on community and tragedy, and results in an overwhelming emotional resonance with the play itself.

LIONS celebrates the power of Auckland’s diverse population when it comes together in unison, illuminated through the quiet dedication of our community choirs.
